Now that speed cameras are going to be introduced, I'm just wondering if anyone here is contemplating burning, wrecking or blowing them up from time to time. Considering that its a private firm who will be running them, they will be the worst money scam ever. Do you for 1 mph over the limit. f**king government are a joke and are ignoring the will of the people. The guys over in England seem to be having a great time at it. www.speedcam.co.uk/gatso2.htm

this might be a help news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/wear/7033353.stmI seem to remember reading somewhere that there has been no effect on the accident rates since they were introduced, that in fact if anything accident rates were higher

At least the Gardaí use discretion from time to time, like if your doing 65 on a dual carriageway a Gard won’t pull you. Once you introduce a Profit motive to a Social obligation things invariably don’t change for the better. See Health Service, Train service, Aer Lingus for further evidence...

Agreed, the Gardai do use a bit a common sense, but with there been the profit factor they'll screw you every each way. Out of interest, who exactly would get the contract for the camera's? Would it be the one company nationwide or one per province/county etc? Will it be a company brought in from across the waters or will some Irish speed camera company (whose boss happens to be friends with people in high places) spring up out of the blue?

I understand the tender process is very close to being completed, with the contract due to be awarded shortly. Most likely a foreign company with experience.

Its the speed limits that are all wrong. The Motorways should be 140kph and dual carriage ways 120kph. Rare enough there are ever crashes on these roads, with the exception of whatever ghowl acting was going on on the Naas dual carriage way on Saturday night. Its stupid coming to Dublin and you have to got from 120 down to 100 when you come off the M7/M9 even though the Nass dual carriage way is a better three lane road than the one you came off. There are country roads around the country where you can drive 100kph which make no sense.
Biggest problem is that many people out there simply can't drive. Nobody should be allowed on a public road without passing a test. The test should include at least 10 minutes on a Motorway, no matter how inconvenient it is to the applicant.
